A Brief(ish) Biography of Actor AJ Donnelly

AJ Donnelly is a British actor and voice artist whose performances are known for emotional honesty, versatility, and a deep commitment to the characters he portrays. His journey has so far taken him from school theatre in Bedford to community performance in Beijing, and from major studio productions to independent films, while continually refining not only his craft, but also the values that shape it.

The Early Years
Originally from Bedford, England, childhood was not an easy time for AJ, with difficulties at both home and at school. He often felt out of step with the world around him and struggled to find a place where he fully belonged and was welcomed. He eventually found solace through the performing arts, first in school theatre productions and later with the community troupe Bedford Marionettes. The stage became one of the few places where he felt able to express himself freely and imagine different possibilities for who he could become. Those early experiences planted a seed: the idea that a person could become someone else through nothing more than a change in voice, posture and perspective.
Although acting had become an important part of his life, at 21 AJ made the decision to step away from it and move to China in search of something deeper. He could never have imagined just how profoundly that decision would shape the years that followed.

Building a Life in China
Drawn by curiosity, opportunity, and the chance to experience a completely different way of life, AJ left England with few expectations beyond a desire to broaden his horizons. China would go on to become far more than simply a place to live. It became the place where he built his adult life.
AJ’s first home in China was the Hebei provincial capital of Shijiazhuang, a city he would eventually come to think of as his Chinese hometown. He began working at a small kindergarten before later teaching adults, working as a business consultant, and even spending short periods as a student himself. Although none of these paths became his long-term career, each broadened his understanding of people, culture and himself.
Learning to navigate a new language, culture and way of thinking challenged him in ways he had never anticipated. It taught him resilience, adaptability, and the value of seeing the world through perspectives very different from his own. Looking back, those early years in China proved to be some of the most formative of his life, though not always for the reasons he had expected and not always for the best.

Mistakes, Reflection & Growth
Those early years in China saw AJ make a lot of mistakes. Some hurt people he cared about and damaged important relationships. Others came from placing his trust in the wrong people or failing to recognise situations that, with hindsight, he should have walked away from. Looking back, he recognises that he often failed to fully understand either the situations he was placing himself in or the impact his actions could have on other people. While that understanding came later, it has never lessened his sense of responsibility. Instead, it strengthened his commitment to learning from those experiences, becoming a better person because of them, and ensuring he never repeated the same mistakes.
Today, integrity, authenticity and personal accountability guide every aspect of AJ’s life. Those experiences continue to shape not only the way he lives, but also the work he does as an actor, informing the stories he is drawn to, the roles he chooses to explore, and the empathy and emotional depth he brings to every character.

Returning to Acting
Committed to not repeating earlier mistakes and misjudgements, AJ started his second decade in China in a stable job and a loving relationship. Eventually, simply looking for a new hobby and encouraged by his then-girlfriend (now wife), Nic, AJ auditioned for Beijing Playhouse, a community theatre group in Beijing. Landing the lead role reminded him how much he had missed acting and marked the beginning of his return to performance. What began as a single audition soon introduced him to people working across Beijing’s film and television industry, gradually opening the door to a professional acting career.
Since then, AJ has become known for his ability to transform his physicality, voice and presence, bringing clarity, authenticity and emotional truth to every role. His career reflects a commitment to continual growth and a willingness to embrace characters that challenge him both emotionally and technically.
Although often cast as intense or antagonistic figures, AJ’s range extends far beyond the villain. He is drawn to complex, morally ambiguous characters whose motivations are layered, whose inner lives are unpredictable, and whose outward behaviour rarely tells the full story.

Life & Health
Health has played an unexpected but formative role in AJ’s life. Living with Type 1 diabetes from the age of 17 required discipline, consistency and a deep awareness of his own physical limits and rhythms. Those habits of discipline, preparation and self-management would later become fundamental to the way he approached his career.
In recent years, a cancer diagnosis brought a different kind of reckoning. Treatment and recovery demanded patience, perspective and resilience. Rather than diminishing his ambitions, the experience deepened his appreciation for time, strengthened his commitment to his craft, and reinforced the importance of the people around him.

Career Highlights
Since returning to acting, AJ has built more than 40 stage, television and film credits across a wide range of productions. His work spans major studio productions, independent films and theatre, and he has collaborated with internationally acclaimed directors including Zhang Yimou and Zhang Mo (Snipers), Andrew Lau (The Battle of Shangganling), and Jiang Wen (You Are the Best!).
Recent work includes his portrayal of lawyer Matthew Roberts in the crime drama Empty Gun, the ruthless British opium trader Lancelot Dent in the historical epic 1840, and Thomas Lawrence in the box-office hit Detective Chinatown: 1900.
Despite working mostly in film and television, AJ continues to value theatre as an important part of his development, returning to the stage whenever the right opportunity arises. He has also deliberately expanded his work to include student films, short films and independent productions, believing that creativity, experimentation and meaningful storytelling are not defined by budget. This has included participating in his first 48 Hour Film Project in 2025, reflecting his continued desire to challenge himself while supporting emerging filmmakers.
Alongside his on-screen work, AJ has also built a successful career as a voice artist, lending his voice to commercials, documentaries, audiobooks, television, educational materials and dubbing projects for clients in both China and internationally.

Clarity & Understanding
In early 2026, while filming Empty Gun, AJ received a formal autism diagnosis. Although he had long suspected it, the diagnosis finally gave many of the experiences and patterns that had followed him throughout his life a clearer explanation.
AJ does not see autism as something that defines him. Instead, it has helped him better understand the way he observes the world, connects with people, and approaches his craft. The intense focus, sensitivity to detail, fascination with patterns of human behaviour, and deep commitment to authenticity that shape his work are not separate from his neurodivergence; they are part of it.
The diagnosis did not change who he is, but helped him understand himself more clearly. It also brought a greater awareness of the unique challenges autism continues to present in everyday life and work, allowing him to build routines, environments and working practices that better support both his wellbeing and his creativity. Looking ahead, AJ hopes to continue taking on complex roles, including those that reflect neurodivergent experiences, while contributing through his work, writing and public speaking to a broader understanding of autism and neurodiversity. He hopes people will increasingly see neurodiversity not as a limitation, but as one of the many ways human beings experience and understand the world.

Away From the Spotlight
Beyond acting, AJ also works as a presenter, voice artist, and runs his own cultural exchange company. Professionally, he has collaborated with national media outlets, tourism organisations, government agencies and a wide range of travel destinations to create travel, cultural and educational content. Whether on screen or behind a microphone, he is drawn to projects that tell meaningful stories and help people better understand places, ideas and one another.
He also enjoys sharing aspects of his life through social media, using it as a way to connect directly with people interested in his work, his travels, and the ideas that shape his outlook. When the workday ends, however, life becomes intentionally quieter. AJ values curiosity over celebrity, meaningful conversations over crowded rooms, and believes that a peaceful home provides the foundation for better work.
As a result, much of his free time is spent quietly at home, studying acting, advocating for animal welfare, playing old-school video games, and unwinding with classic television series. AJ lives with his wife, Nic, their elderly Miniature Schnauzer Ruby, Teddy, their paraplegic Toy Poodle, and Dean, the latest of several foster dogs they have welcomed into their home.
For AJ, advocacy, hard work and thoughtful choices have never been about pursuing fame, success, or even simply becoming a better actor. They are part of a much broader goal: striving to become a better person, both publicly and privately, and living a life that reflects the same integrity he hopes to bring to every role he plays.

Philosophy of Performance
When asked how he approaches acting, AJ often returns to one idea:
“As actors, I don’t think it’s our job to pretend to be someone. I think it’s our job to find those characters within ourselves, then simply show that side of ourselves to the world. In that way, it’s always truth that we are bringing to the audience. I started acting because I wanted to hide, to shield myself from the world behind another character. Now I act because I want to explore and expose every facet of myself through those characters.”
